Ilocos Norte Sand Dunes : Timeless Beauty and an Extreme Adventure

The sand dunes popularly known as the Desert of the North is about 40
sq km stretch of sand and covers about 85 sq km. The sand dunes
spreads in the towns of Currimao and Paoay including Laoag City and
extends a part in Pasuquin. The sand can reach 10-30 meters high. But
in some sheltered areas it can reach up to 90 meters.

Due to its unique environment and its scientific and educational
importance, the National Committee on Geological Sciences recognized
the Ilocos Norte Sand Dunes as one of the National Geological
Monuments in 1993. A marker was then erected in Calayab, Laoag City.
